Silicone hydrogel material represents one of the most important innovations in recent history. They give unprecedented oxygen permeability to soft disposable contact lenses. Thereby decreasing most the complications that result from hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the front of the eye).
These lenses include: Biofinity, Focus Night and Day, O2 Optix, PureVision and Acuvue Oasys. These lenses are more permable to oxygen than water. Most patients love the new material.
A recent Fusarium keratitis outbreak brought a new awareness to contact lens solutions. We are all more aware that solutions and proper lens cleanings are very important. Two companies have tested their solutions extensively and reported them to the FDA. At this time, there are only four care systems that are FDA indicated for use with silicone hydrogels:
